A Glasgow girl, In 1993, at the age of 17, I gained a place at Glasgow School of Art to study Drawing and Painting, completing my BA(hons). 1997 saw my enrolment at University of Strathclyde to complete a Post Graduate in Education, I graduated with Distinction. I spent the next 12 years in Secondary Art & Design Education. Whilst I love this job and I’m extremely passionate about the teaching of true creativity, I always wanted to make my own work. 2010 saw an opportunity to take a career break and explore… I moved to NYC and studied Academic Life Painting at the New York Academy of Fine Art. I Raised my young family here for 4 years and returned to Glasgow in 2014. Upon my return I began to teach the Portfolio Preparation Course as an Art Tutor at the Visual Art Studio, Tramway, Glasgow. I spent the last 5 fantastic years doing this, it was a truly wonderful opportunity to be inspired by the contemporary artists and designers of our future. In many ways I believe I learned more here about true creativity than any study ever before. I have met so many wonderful students and colleagues at VAS, it was a privilege to be part of their journey. I continue to teach PPC privately with a limited number of students so that I can now give time to my own work.
MATERIALS
I love to use acrylic and oil based paints as well as many other mark making mediums. I would describe my painting technique as intuitive. I enjoy the exploration of paint through application with a variety of materials, creating layers of colour and scrubbing back until the painting reveals itself.
INSPIRATION
I have always searched for the satisfaction in creating something. My early studies concentrated on figurative aspects but as I’ve developed my work has become far less representational and more abstract.
I don’t want my work to be literal. I now work more spontaneously and allow the painting to realise itself, inner thought
INSPIRATION
I have always searched for the satisfaction in creating something. My early studies concentrated on figurative aspects but as I’ve developed my work has become far less representational and more abstract.
I don’t want my work to be literal. I now work more spontaneously and allow the painting to realise itself, inner thought meets outside world. I want it to be interpreted by the viewers personal response and perspective. I relish the experience of surprise by unpredictable combinations of both accidental and intentional mark making. I seek to experience and enjoy the pleasure of realisation through paint, its application and surface. when these combinations culminate in a rich balance that is satisfying and holds the viewers attention I feel the painting is complete.
My inspiration is really life. The everyday world and our response to it. There are so many analogies between the process of painting and life in general. Life is largely unplanned, you respond to what shows up along your path, it requires discipline, risk, and curiosity to search for your place and identity in the greater picture, learning from our experiences and all of this is true in the process of my painting also.
